Purpose: To systematically review the effect of Intrathecal baclofen pump insertion in children with cerebral palsy in aspect of scoliosis.
Method: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMED, EMBase, Cochrane, Google scholar up to June 2020. These studies should meet the following criteria (1)study group being composed of children with cerebral palsy (2)analysis comparing intrathecal baclofen inserted group with control (3)usage of Cobb’s angle as an objective tool to examine scoliosis.
Results: Of 76 studies searched in PubMED, EMBase, Cochrane and Google scholar, 4 met aforementioned inclusion criteria, all of them being retrospective comparative studies. Intrathecal baclofen pump insertion showed acceleration in progression of scoliosis, compared by using annual change of cobb’s angle as a parameter. (SMD = 0.292; 95% CI = 0.091;0.492, p=0.0044).
Conclusion: Intrathecal baclofen pump has been used to alleviate spasticity of children with cerebral palsy, thus aiding their daily activities and movements. However, we discovered intrathecal baclofen pump’s negative effect on the course of scoliosis, calling for enough amount of time to weigh profits and losses.
