Objective: To investigate the relationship between bone mineral density attenuation and clinical factors including functional activity in Korean spinal cord injury patients.
Methods: This study included 44 Korean SCI patients whose femur neck, total hip, and lumbar spine BMDs were measured. BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The BMD values were represented as T-score for patients >50 years and Z-score for patients <50 years. The relationship between BMD and clinical factors, including age and physical function, was analyzed.
Results: The BMD scores of the femur neck and total hip in the Standable group were significantly higher than those in the Sedentary group (P < 0.01), but BMD scores of the lumbar spine showed no statistically significant difference between groups (P > 0.05). Low extremity motor score and modified functional ambulation classification showed a moderately positive correlation with the femur neck (P < 0.01) and total hip (P < 0.01) BMD, but not with the lumbar spine BMD (P > 0.05). Age factor also did not show a statistically significant correlation with BMD (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: The results imply that reduced mobility, physical activity, and unloading due to SCI cause BMD attenuation in Korean SCI patients.
