Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can be treated by specific drug injection in to the intra-articular space. Several failures during drug injection attempts using conventional fluoroscopy and ultrasonography into small area of the intra-articular space was reported . In this study we present a novel impedance measurement based needle tip positioning to enhance the image-guided intra-articular injection therapy. A novel algorithm for detecting intra-articular space in the knee and elbow joints of the living porcine model was reported. The impedance measurement system was developed for biological tissue measurement. Electrical impedance in the intra-articular space was monitored and needle tip was examined by ultrasonography. The contrast dye was vaccinated and checked by fluoroscopy to confirm that the contrast dye was properly inoculated in the cavity. Electrical impedance was estimated as for various needle inclusion profundity levels into the saline solution, which was broadly used to approve the device execution for organic examination. The study showed a good efficiency in the impedance based measurement using monopolar injection needle for intra-articular therapy.
