Objectives: The neural networks between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC)/precuneus are known to be involved in internal awareness and consciousness. Suitable reconstruction methods for these networks have not clearly elucidated. In this study, we attempted to reconstruct the neural networks between the mPFC and the PCC/precuneus in normal subjects by using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).
Methods: Thirty-six right-handed healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. A probabilistic tractography method based on a multi-fiber model was used for fiber tracking. For reconstruction of the neural networks between the mPFC and the PCC/precuneus, the seed region of interest (ROI) was placed on the mPFC (Brodmann’s areas 14, 24, 25, and 32) and the target ROIs were placed on the PCC and the precuneus. Fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, and tract volume were measured for each network.
Results: Among the 72 cerebral hemispheres of the 36 normal subjects, neural networks between the mPFC and PCC were reconstructed in 52 hemispheres (72%), and the neural networks between the mPFC and the precuneus were reconstructed in 61 hemispheres (85%). No significant differences in DTT parameters were observed between left and right hemispheres (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: We used DTT reconstruction methods to elucidate characteristics of the neural networks between the mPFC and PCC/precuneus in normal subjects. We believe that the reconstruction method and neural network results will be useful in future neuroscience studies.
